Any chance for an appimage for Linux or a package for Arch Linux?

(+1)

I don’t use Arch but it sounds like you can extract the .deb or if you can grab the source from GitHub and build yourself too

(+5)(-2)

Yo this is sick

(-1)

Problem: on version 2.0.0 when I click create, it doesn't load for like a million years I know its still in beta so can you please fix this for the final release?

(+1)

Hi SeanSS which version are you using? It’s almost instant for me on both the Mac and Windows 64-bit versions. Does it work eventually or does it never load? Anyone else having this problem?

Nevermind, Must've downloaded the wrong version

It happened again i'm using the Windows 64-bit one, I used to get it to work before but now its not

(1 edit) (+1)(-1)

The same thing is happening on Mac. I feel like it might be something about the folder it is going into because when I create a new project on the desktop it works fine but when it is created in a folder it takes forever to load.

Edit - forgot to mention that the same thing happens for both blank and sample projects and I remember this happening on 1.2.1 as well

I was having this same problem and after seeing Pyro143's comment I tried changing the default place for creating a new project, and it worked straight away. All I did was choose another folder.

I'm so glad I could help! :)

(+3)(-1)

i can translate it!

(+6)(-3)

tar.gz would be a nice way to distribute the linux version

Tar.gz sucks. It's hard to compile and run unlike .deb for Ubuntu/Debian users

(+1)(-1)

very interesting

Any chance for an appimage for Linux or a package for Arch Linux?

(-2)

i love it so mach, but you can do this on a mobile?

(2 edits) (-2)

i love the beta.

(-1)

is there a way for people to play this as an exe file?

(+1)

you could use the chromium way to wrap html5 in exe file, not very difficult task, but think about it as a beta

(-1)

?

(+1)

first video i could googled up https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kN1Czs0m1SU

ok

(+1)

Been loving the beta! I've found a glitch with the one-way collisions, if you go inside the left collision, you can't move both left and right, but on the right collision, you can go on both sides. Unfortunately, I haven't experimented on the top and bottom collisions

(+2)

This stuff is so cool

(+1)

Love the engine! I fulfilled my promised to donate after 2.0 came out, I hope this/you grow more and blow the dev industry. Thank you for existing. Now I'll be able to make shitty metroidvanias and such lol.

Upon final release, can we have some teaks?

like; the slippery run on platformer mode? i know its a bit nitpicky but i cant do precise platforming with it...its a bit slippery to navigate

the collissions. can we have the ability to drop down while pushing down jump?

i know im wishful thinking, but id like to have an interact button mappable with up, where instead of A, you push up to talk to other npcs, id love to have both a(attacking) and b(jumping) have custoizable usage, start and select too.

i love to have moving bgs and higher unique tiles in the future.

hoping and praying =)

Moving backgrounds and the tile/sprite limit are limitations of the GameBoy hardware, so I don’t think those are possible.

In the download page, which one should I be downloading? I have an HP Windows computer but I'm not sure what a squirrel installer is. (I'm pretty new to this kind of stuff.)

(+2)

I think the 64-bit Windows  Squirrel versions are the ones for you :-) version 1.2.1 is a bit more stable than 2.0.0 but the new one lets you make platform games and shoot em ups as well as make games in color!

(+1)

Squirrel is just an easy install version, double click the application and it will install it for you and start it automatically and create links on your Start menu. The other Windows versions just come as a zip file that you have to manage yourself.

Thank you very much for the advice. SO excited to try this out!

Making games without coding is what GB Studio is designed for, actually. c: There's even beginner Youtube tutorials to help guide you through the process.

(-1)

Idk how to make ROM`s

But I wanna see someone try to recreate pokemon red and blue in this Rom builder.

no

(+1)

This is so cool!

(+1)

For the music, can you only use .mod files, or are you able to use other file formats? If not, what's the best way to go about making music in the .mod format?

(+1)

At the moment it's just .mod files that are supported. The community has put some instructions together with a list of applications for making the files though at https://www.gbstudio.dev/docs/music/

(+1)

Amazing

(+5)

can this be used for commercial purposes?

(+3)

Yeah it can :-) some people have even been making physical cartridges to sell their games like Dragonborne https://tofa24.itch.io/dragonborne-adventure-rpg-gameboy

(+2)

finally, yes!

(1 edit) (+1)

Been loving GBstudio 2.0 so far! I did find a little glitch in the sample project (see video below) http://www.octycat.com/assets/Screen%20Recording%202020-08-21%20at%205.49.39%20PM.mp4

(+2)

Hah, ooops! Looks like changing the trigger and adding a hidden collision wall like this should stop the issue. I'll make a change like this in the next beta release, thanks for spotting it!

(+1)

Awesome! :3

(+1)

\o/

(+2)

Yay!

(+3)

YAY!!! IVE BEEN WAITING ALL SUMMER FOR THIS , THANK YOU!!

(+2)

yay! Beta for v2 is here!

(+1)

Anyone know what font is used on the title screen? I really like it, but I can't find it anywhere online.

(+2)

Which title screen??

This one:

Useful tool when I want to make a quick sketch-up of a game before manually programming a gb rom, if I could request one feature though it would be simultaneous events, couldn't tell you how many times I've needed multiple actors to move in sync

(3 edits)

I am been visiting this place usually from January 2020 to see if any new update and i wish that i will be able to edit the old .gb files with gb studio

used for Pokemon games and Super Mario but i think it is still under copyright or make .gbc color games

(+4)

I don't think you'll be able to edit roms in GB Studio, because the roms weren't compiled in GB Studio. If you are looking to make rom hacks, I do suggest you look elsewhere. I think GB Studio is primarily designed for creating your own stuff, not editing stuff that already exists.

You won't be able to do that. The best option you have is something like this: https://github.com/pret/pokered

i'm looking forward to the new update, i currently uploaded a little wink to my project with gb studio

love<3

(1 edit)

it looks cool very cool

visiting every day until 2.0 release!

hope you all have a wonderful day.

on upcoming updates i hope for some features;

-a pc or mobile bootable file?/an exe file or apk file with built in emulator so we can upload on some gamejams that requires such executables and not only gb file? (cant hurt to dream)

Dude same though.

(1 edit)

You can use the Program file load connector to connect exe to any file

will autoload

I'm just leaving a comment to keep up the streak we've built up in order to keep hype going for GB Studio 2.0.0! Who knows, maybe 2.0 will add multiple fonts, or a way to make .mod files in the software so you know how it'll sound before you import it! Or a spoon! I like spoon!

(+1)

Hoping for that spoon in 2.0

Just got the first 2.0 beta, was upset by the lack of spoon. 3/10. Please add spoon.

(+1)(-3)

try to make an android version, it would be interesting

I think that may need some Java or Kotlin

(1 edit) (+1)

lol i know this isn't very relevant but my birthday is in 9 days, and gb studio 2 is hopefully going to be so much fun to use to make games on my birthday :D

also i have a few extra ideas for 2.0.0:

- studio mod support (eg. custom emulator, support for features not supplied by maltby but by modders)

- player overlays (like a hat sprite so if you have multiple characters and you dont want to make multiple sprites with a hat for, use an overlay and it puts the overlay over the character along with 3 sides like a moving player sprite)

- and folders to organize sprites with their category.

I dont know if any of these ideas will be added but it would make game development much easier (especially the sprite overlay)

I would love having plugin support for gb studio, that could add so much to GBStudio

Excuse me does anybody know if this can be useful for a GBA game? :(

currently, no. 1.2.1 only supports original GB games, but 2.0.0 should support GBC-enhanced games. I don't know if there will be a "GBA Studio" but I ... wouldn't count on it.

Did you know where can I get something to get info about how to make a GBA game? I appreciate your help

try googling or searching through youtube lol

doesnt gba have backwards of the compatibility

yeah and ds & ds lite can go all the way back to gameboy og i think

(+1)

No, DS and DS Lite can only play GBA.

i just figured that out

i think that theres a conversion cart maybe

It will be playable on the GBA however the hardware of a GBA is very different then that of the GB, GBP and GBC. as a result a lot of the coding might actually need to be different and would require a completely different editor to run correctly.

I know this probably won't be seen but please Chris can you team up with a company or something to give us a flasher and carts specifically designed for Gbstudio? I know this would help a lot of people including myself. Sorta like NESmaker

(+1)

I have flashed games made with GB Studio with my flasher and carts from https://retrostage.net/ and they have worked perfectly on original hardware

(+1)

Super cool for part two of the tool, can't wait! I have a suggestion, it would be great to be able to export the dialogue review into a simple text file, to fine tune long dialogues.

same, but i want them to add multiple premade borders and fonts for gb studio, i don't want to modify the current since i usually mess things up when i try to change it :v

Borders are easy, fonts difficult due to the work, but yes, I don't know how to use multiple types within one game.

Hey Chris, this is a great tool :D
Btw is there a french localisation?

i dont think so but im sure that will happen soon if maltby sees this :D
