lol i know this isn't very relevant but my birthday is in 9 days, and gb studio 2 is hopefully going to be so much fun to use to make games on my birthday :D
also i have a few extra ideas for 2.0.0:
- studio mod support (eg. custom emulator, support for features not supplied by maltby but by modders)
- player overlays (like a hat sprite so if you have multiple characters and you dont want to make multiple sprites with a hat for, use an overlay and it puts the overlay over the character along with 3 sides like a moving player sprite)
- and folders to organize sprites with their category.
I dont know if any of these ideas will be added but it would make game development much easier (especially the sprite overlay)
currently, no. 1.2.1 only supports original GB games, but 2.0.0 should support GBC-enhanced games. I don't know if there will be a "GBA Studio" but I ... wouldn't count on it.
It will be playable on the GBA however the hardware of a GBA is very different then that of the GB, GBP and GBC. as a result a lot of the coding might actually need to be different and would require a completely different editor to run correctly.
I know this probably won't be seen but please Chris can you team up with a company or something to give us a flasher and carts specifically designed for Gbstudio? I know this would help a lot of people including myself. Sorta like NESmaker
Super cool for part two of the tool, can't wait! I have a suggestion, it would be great to be able to export the dialogue review into a simple text file, to fine tune long dialogues.
same, but i want them to add multiple premade borders and fonts for gb studio, i don't want to modify the current since i usually mess things up when i try to change it :v
to change the font of dialouge in your game, go to your assets folder in file explorer, then go to ui, and open ascii.png. you can change what the letters look like in there!
keep in mind that they have to still be the same colours since its a part of gb studio, and it won't work on physical hardware with custom colors (yet)
Can i move actor? i have 16px cloud sprite, i need to move it to left X around 10-16px and back -X same 10-16 px. Is it possible to animate it with "Event"? Thank you!
the game may not handle well as you have to use Move To and it does pause input (i believe) so i don't think that would work, but you could use animation frames and multiple sprites to make it look like its moving..?
Can I share my development here? I'm learning GB Studio by creating Hamlet as a GB RPG. May as well be ambitious. Currently working out all the variables to progress the plot of the story.
Watching the video about 10 times, I noticed an icon in the bottom left of the horizontal shooter example that stays in place while the background scrolls.
Is this perhaps the start of HUD implementation? :D
sorry for so many comments but if anybody has any questions about gb studio or needs some help, reply to this and ill try to help you. if you want to see what people like me have been using gb studio for, check out my profile. im happy to help!
Hi, I've been getting an error with mod2gbt during compiling. It's an output error and the music can't be opened for some reason. I have no idea what is wrong with the songs sadly and have watched the videos on how to make music optimized for the programme. Thank you.
The page for the CRNVRS English update seems to be taken down and I can't find it anywhere else online. Do you know anything about why this is the case?
Can you please build in a tile-based map editor and maybe also a music editor? In the current state it's a little inconvenient to make a new game from scratch.
I'd definitely like this too, it's not going to be there for the next release but both music and tile editing (and sprite editing for that matter) are things I'd like to include eventually
you COULD make it an executable perhaps with VS and a windows forms, but im not sure how to make it a full emulator. i can try to get back to you if i find out a way to make a simple emulator for these :)
I have a question and suggestion the question is how do i make an animated intro and the suggestion is can u please let the graphic limit be 210. its a very good software tho.
to make an animated intro you can use fades, animation frames, and sprites.
for your graphic limit suggestion: maltby doesnt get a choice on that, its based off real gameboy hardware so people with flash can use the games without a problem.
Thanks for the help on the animated intro, and for the graphic part i guess I'll just deal with small the amount since the beta of the new gbstudio has came out
Anyone got any tips on how i can save pixels when designing background? i keep getting a message that my background are over the unique 8x8 pixel limit and i'm struggling to design stuff.
One thing you could try is using software designed creating tiled game backgrounds. Tiled is free and is perfect for this kind of thing https://thorbjorn.itch.io/tiled Eventually I'd like this kind of functionality built directly into GB Studio but it might take a while :-)
I have an idea for a sequel to GB Studio: GBA STUDIO
For Gameboy Advance games. I NEED THAT please! YAAAS!
There would be much freedom with less limitations, The Gameboy is okay, but if there were a GBA version, I would be able to make my game the best it could be. Thank you for making GB Studio, I can make a prototype of my game.
Is there currently any way to make a character chase after you? The game I want to design involves you having to run away a lot for reasons that are out of your control and I may need help figuring it out.
from what ive seen in the new trailer for 2.0.0, multiple sprites might be able to move at the same time, so what your thinking of might be do able when it releases. for now, you could try using a player sprite sheet with the character thats chasing you behind the player, but im not too sure how you could do that.
I really like GB Studio and can't wait to see what will be in the next update. Do you know if it would be possible to have a "no" transition between scenes? What I mean is that the next scene would instantly show instead of having a transition. It could make doing "cutscenes" a lot more easier (Ex.: using 6 scenes with a reapeating animation frame as the background, I've tried with the transition but it would be a lot more convincing with no transition).
instead of using multiple scenes, use animation frames and Move To blocks. its a lot more practical. but having no transitions would be nice for me too, or being able to change the transition to a slide effect or something :v
This is an unusual question I know, but does anyone know of some Game Genie codes that mess with GB Studio Games? I'm looking to disable collisions, but also other weird codes that mess with stuff would also be much appreciated!
Also, can I sell the games I make on your wonderful engine for money on Itch.io? And could I make a 3 hour plus game with GB studio? Can I change around the color pallet? Also can I make a JRPG?
help me please. I tried to install, but my linux and i836 and did not install because the debian installer is amd64, please help me (I never used linux so if I said any wrong information sorry)
Hi Chris, currently developing a game for fun with GB studio. I thought I'd challenge myself to make a computer game while on lockdown. I want to know: to share my game to itch, is it as simple as creating an export build for web, zip it and upload to itch? You mention something about changing the view port, is that in GB studio or in exported files somewhere? thanks in advance.
Hi Phil, that’s pretty much it! The viewport part is just in Itch, once you upload the zip and set it as web playable Itch asks for a width/height to use. All you need to do from GB Studio is the web export :-)
That looks amazing! Its so original! I just made my account here on itch.io to see things like that!
It may be a stupid question, but do you plan to put it on steam? There are a lot of games developed in GB Studio here, but I never seen one on Steam. Is it possible?
As a personal opinion, the games I develop should be played on the console for which it was created. Playing a 1MB game on systems that support games with a lot of GB, detracts from the gameplay and gaming experience.
Gameboy games has a lot of limitations, starting with the color palette, resolution, size, etc.
It's just a personal opinion. This is why I am in favor of maintaining the cartridge and play the games in the original console despite the fact that the users are very few.

try to make an android version, it would be interesting
I think that may need some Java or Kotlin
lol i know this isn't very relevant but my birthday is in 9 days, and gb studio 2 is hopefully going to be so much fun to use to make games on my birthday :D

I would love having plugin support for gb studio, that could add so much to GBStudio
Excuse me does anybody know if this can be useful for a GBA game? :(
currently, no. 1.2.1 only supports original GB games, but 2.0.0 should support GBC-enhanced games. I don't know if there will be a "GBA Studio" but I ... wouldn't count on it.
Did you know where can I get something to get info about how to make a GBA game? I appreciate your help
try googling or searching through youtube lol
doesnt gba have backwards of the compatibility
yeah and ds & ds lite can go all the way back to gameboy og i think
No, DS and DS Lite can only play GBA.
i just figured that out
i think that theres a conversion cart maybe
It will be playable on the GBA however the hardware of a GBA is very different then that of the GB, GBP and GBC. as a result a lot of the coding might actually need to be different and would require a completely different editor to run correctly.
I know this probably won't be seen but please Chris can you team up with a company or something to give us a flasher and carts specifically designed for Gbstudio? I know this would help a lot of people including myself. Sorta like NESmaker
I have flashed games made with GB Studio with my flasher and carts from https://retrostage.net/ and they have worked perfectly on original hardware
Borders are easy, fonts difficult due to the work, but yes, I don't know how to use multiple types within one game.
Hey Chris, this is a great tool :D
Btw is there a french localisation?
i dont think so but im sure that will happen soon if maltby sees this :D
Hi. How to change Font sprites?
to change the font of dialouge in your game, go to your assets folder in file explorer, then go to ui, and open ascii.png. you can change what the letters look like in there!

yeah, same like i am thinking now, but limit of actors test me. But i love it.
Can I share my development here? I'm learning GB Studio by creating Hamlet as a GB RPG. May as well be ambitious. Currently working out all the variables to progress the plot of the story.
ooh, cool!
thanks, I enjoyed your Penguin game.
thanks lol
Great idea! :)
I hope so! Dr Robot was a good idea.
That's very kind, but it's not Shakespeare ;)
Some argue even Shakespeare was not Shakespeare, though I don't.
Very excited for the release of 2.0 ! Hurrah!
Watching the video about 10 times, I noticed an icon in the bottom left of the horizontal shooter example that stays in place while the background scrolls.
Is this perhaps the start of HUD implementation? :D
*hooves crossed*
Cheers, and keep up the great work! :)
QS =D
I hope that when 2.0 releases, the gameboy icon is updated to a gameboy color.
i check everyday for the update. i'm also REALLY excited.

hmm, ive never used that program before. i might see whats going on, but please send me the videos your using so i can reproduce your bug.
can you make a nes game engine if is drag and drop and is easy pls
im sure something like that already exists, or something around that idea. look around on google!
as amount of code required, GBStudio < RPG Maker < NES Maker (40 bucks)
Hey man,
some chance to have C64Studio? :)
well good luck remaking fireball factory in basic.
hey Chris!
I used GB Studio to create the visuals for "CRNVRS", a pandemic-related animation.
The playable version is on my itch page (the link for the animation w/ soundtrack is also there).
I'm still learning to use all of GBS' tools but so far I'm deeply in love with it, your work is fantastic. I hope I can contribute with cash asap.
Thanks a lot for making it avaiable, best regards from Brazil!
The page for the CRNVRS English update seems to be taken down and I can't find it anywhere else online. Do you know anything about why this is the case?
It has just been made public right now. Sorry about that, mental health issues.
saw the trailer for update, it was awesome. cant wait for august
Thanks! Can't wait until it's ready for people to start using :-)
Can you please build in a tile-based map editor and maybe also a music editor? In the current state it's a little inconvenient to make a new game from scratch.
I'd definitely like this too, it's not going to be there for the next release but both music and tile editing (and sprite editing for that matter) are things I'd like to include eventually
A proper editor built in too (to edit sprites and backgrounds easily) would be very nice, but paint.net does the job for now.
Can this make executables, or only stuff that runs on emulators?
It can't make executables but it can make HTML files besides the regular rom
Thank you so much of the reply!
np
you COULD make it an executable perhaps with VS and a windows forms, but im not sure how to make it a full emulator. i can try to get back to you if i find out a way to make a simple emulator for these :)

i believe that will be here soon, but dont count on it.
We need a SNES maker too but thats for a different comment section.
i believe something like that exists but i dont know if its any good since i like to stick around gameboy since its very simplistic
https://github.com/milodraco/SNES-like_audio
thanks dude!

Thanks Chris! I presume that would be simply amazing.
When are you planning to release the next update?
currently theres no exact release date, its more of a release-on-finish kind of update, but we know that it should be dropping this august! :]
This is an unusual question I know, but does anyone know of some Game Genie codes that mess with GB Studio Games? I'm looking to disable collisions, but also other weird codes that mess with stuff would also be much appreciated!
Okay I'm very sorry to bother you, but it says I need libnss3
Type those commands into the linux terminal
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libnss3-dev
Thanks man, I will tag you in a tweet you've been of very much help.
It says cannot locate libnss3-dev even though I updated.
Ok, here should be everything you need, just follow instructions under Ubuntu / Debian-based Linux category
https://www.gbstudio.dev/docs/installation/
EDIT:
In line :
sudo dpkg -i gb-studio_1.0.0_amd64.deb
change the "gb-studio_1.0.0_amd64.deb" to current .deb file name that you have
Sorry to bother you again but, I did the instructions and downloaded the ubuntu/Debian Linux but it says it isn't a Debian file.
I checked it on a chromebook and after extracting files from zip, there was a .deb file.
I have a chrome book, which of the above downloads should I choose? Or when or if will you make a chrome download.
If you have a chromebook, I recommend using Ubuntu/Debian Linux version, it can be run via Linux terminal on your chromebook
Also, can I sell the games I make on your wonderful engine for money on Itch.io? And could I make a 3 hour plus game with GB studio? Can I change around the color pallet? Also can I make a JRPG?
Looking at the license, I think you can sell your games made in this engine.
I don't see any problem with making long game.
In GB Studio you are restricted to 4 colors but you can change them
I don't known if you can make a JRPG, I don't really known limitations of this game engine
More information you should be able to find here: https://www.gbstudio.dev/docs/
sorry, I meant turn based RPG. I get my genre's mixed up, sorry.
when are you planning to realease 1.2.2?
1.2.2 isnt coming out, 2.0.0 is.
Hello,
I want to share with you another game concept I created with GBStudio.
Programming has been the most difficult thing to do to get the boats closer, but it works.
Looks great! :-D
Thanks for your comment Chris,
Just in case you didn't know: https://www.thenew8bitheroes.com/
Its very similar to GBStudio (NES 8bit version.)
Have a nice day!
DP
Awesome game engine. Very satisfying to use. Can’t wait for more genres of games to be supported.
help me please. I tried to install, but my linux and i836 and did not install because the debian installer is amd64, please help me (I never used linux so if I said any wrong information sorry)
Hi Chris,
I just want to thank you for the interface that you have created to facilitate the creation of Gameboy games.
I also would like to share with you some games that I have created with your platform. You can have a look at greenboygames.com
Thanks!

Very cool concept.
I tend to have bad luck building Electron apps on my Gentoo Linux install, but this was very simple to get up and running, so thanks for that.
question, is it possible to make point and click games in this?
Some people have managed to do it with the current version but this is something I’m going to be adding officially in the next big release ;-)
Ah, OK, thank you.
I'm creating something similar a point n click game. you can take a look here .
That looks amazing! Its so original! I just made my account here on itch.io to see things like that!

Just wanted to say, that's some awesome work, love the idea!
i have a suggestion.
could you make users able to add color palettes exclusively for game boy color?
In the latest version you can set a custom palette for the entire game. The next update is gonna add full GBC color.
