I'm uploading the start of my GB Studio game to itch.io to get some play testers. I uploaded a zipped folder with the html file in it but when I go to play it on the game's page, it gives me a black screen and no audio. Basically the game doesn't run. Are there certain things I need to do in GB Studio to get my game to run on itch? Besides the export as web option. I'm using Mac OS 12.6.3 if that's useful.

I'm having issues with the shoot 'em up setting, when I have it selected, the actors move to the Y 3 tile and Y movement doesn't work.

is it possible to make an auto runner?

will you ever add support for videos like meteo but better?

I've apparently been banned on discord for no obvious reason... is this something you're personally promoting? Are you happy with these petty dictator-wannabes? I even tried merely asking 'why'... and was 'disappeared' again within minutes. Like,  seriously? Are they too bored with gbs now, and instead want to harass people? I don't even know who's doing it, so congrats on the unbelievable amount of rationales and transparency...!

(1 edit) (+3)

im sorry this happened to you, ive seen and heard more people getting the same treatment. while chris does link the discord in his website, he does not mod it. so if anything, the fault lies with the moderators themselves. i am not a mod and not that active in the discord, but pls feel free to post your feelings on twitter, tagging the gb studio community so they may hear your side of the matter.

edit:

adding this here for those who want to know more about the discord things, theres the official discord but heres an alt discord with newer mods so its a lil diff https://discord.gg/Gb7KsBNWeq

Is it possible to walk by grid (16*16 pixels) like in RPG Maker games?
Not like Zelda games but Pokemon games on Game Boy.

Not the developer, but when I last tinkered with this, around version 2, that was literally all you could do. Should still be possible.

If anyone wants to know which sound channels the basic sound effects use, beeps and crashes use the noise channel, and tones use the Duty 1 channel.

Finding this out helped me troubleshoot a sound not playing. I had to mute the noise channel in my music in order to get a beep to play.

Wonderful!
This is not a problem to use an external editor for maps and sprites, it is even better since we can use very good dedicated programs like aseprite without any problem.
No need to bother with exporting individual tiles or some special format since GB studio recognizes automatically the tiles from the PNG files!!!!

The music editor also allows for 4 tracks which is enough to make good music.

I have tested bitsy and pulp, rpg maker, pico-8 and a bunch of others but GB studio is the one that is the easiest to make completely original content without bothering with import/export problems. It has the best balance of all the 8/16 bit game maker platforms around!!!

Keep up the good work!!!! (a better/compact interface for the events would be easier to see though)

for anyone having trou bles in dev and other things regarding gb studio i suggest asking the discord channel for help, its a very kind and helpful place thats mainly where the devs are, the reddit, fb and other gbs sites are quiet coz they dont frequent there. heres the channel, pls follow rules and always have a nice day.  discord here [will update link if expired]

This game engine is absolutely amazing!

Something went wrong... How do I fix this?

The Video (on Google Drive) (filmed on ChromeOS)

(-1)

So, I made a game, and this happened to me in scratch, so I don't know how to fix it maybe they fixed it in the latest update. Or it could be your version of ChromeOS because this happened to me a lot when I used a chromebook for game development so google might need to fix that version of chromeOS.

(+2)(-2)

A version for Android devices would be interesting. I'm a dev currently without a PC, and Android is the only way to keep developing games.

Wasn't there an option to donate? I'd like to give some money towards this project.

I am a Java developer & wanted to make a game for my GB.  This is epic, I have yet to deep dive into it but played through the default game & wowza!  I can't wait to see if I can write this to my carts that I got from AliExpress using my GB Operator!  Noicely done!

Please make a version for chromebook.

can you get this on chrome book

Yes. As long as you have Linux Developer Mode enabled.

I'm a little confused, in the images in the preview video it shows sprites and backgrounds using a whole bunch of colors but in the documentation it says you can only use the 4 green-ish ones?

(+9)

By default, GBstudio runs in a monochromatic "GameBoy"-mode, that is able to display only one palette (4 colors).

If you want to display more colors á la Game Boy Color, you need to enable it in the Settings menu, or simply by using the Colorize (z) tool from the left hand side tool panel.

When color mode is enabled for your project, you can then use the colorize tool to color different parts of your background art using different color palettes. If you want to color sprites, you can go to the Sprites-view (ctrl+2), and when you select a sprite, it shows you the option to change its color palette in the right hand side panel. Note: you can use only 1 palette per sprite. If you are using a meta-sprite (a larger sprite that consists of 2 or more smaller sprites), you can define a different palette for each sprite that is used in that meta-sprite (for example: character's upper body is its own sprite, and bottom part is its own sprite).

You can have 8 different color palettes at max in your project, and you can define them in the Settings menu.

Hey, just out of curiosity, would it be possible to get sprites to flicker instead of vanishing if there are too many in a row?

No, it's because of gameboy limitations, not the GB Studio itself.

(1 edit)

That's okay. I sort of figured out a way to do it.

The sprite editor lets you change the order in which the individual sprites in one animation frame are displayed. The further back ones will be dropped if too many are in one row. If you make an animation where the sprite order changes every frame, it will almost be like it's flickering.

Now, each actor has its own priority level, and it's hard to tell what order actors will be displayed in until you run the game, but the player sprite has priority over all other actors, and projectiles will be displayed behind all other actors.

I was testing a level I made for a game based on my YouTube series, and this appeared after losing a life and restarting the stage. What does it mean?

(+1)(-1)

i want download yoshi joins bowser rom

cool

This is awesome

I still don't know how to use the link cable features.

I can't find it in the docs, and fanmade tutorials are kind of hard to follow.

Please add info on the Link Cable, I really need it,

Thank you!

This is fantastic and easy to use! Some of us are practically begging for a color mode that allows for more colors when importing original sprites and backgrounds.

That would be the cherry on the cake for those who want to make game boy advanced RPGs.  Were there any plans for something like that being added?

All the best!
